Summer + Additional Orchestra Opportunities

UNK All-State Orchestra Camp 

UNK Music Department is excited to hold its annual UNK All-State Orchestra Camp on Saturday, August 24, 2024 (8:30am – 4:30pm).

The camp is open to string students (rising 8th to 12th grades). Participants in this event will have opportunities to work with UNK music faculty and a guest clinician in multiple sessions, including All-State excerpts prep, orchestra rehearsals, masterclass, college audition prep, performances, and more.

UNK Concerto Day

FRIDAY, APRIL 19 | 6-9 PM
FINE ARTS BUILDING RECITAL HALL

Bring your friends and family and play a movement of a concerto with a live orchestra – Kearney Symphony Orchestra!
Participants will be chosen to represent a wide variety of orchestral instruments and from students all over the region.
Open to high school 11th and 12th graders.

APPLICATION DEADLINE:
FRIDAY, APRIL 5, 2024, COMPLETED APPLICATION FORM AND RECORDING DEADLINE.

UNO BOCH Honor Orchestra

The online application must be completed by the end of day Monday, November 27, 2023; students will be notified of their acceptance via email by December 11, 2023. Specific audition requirements for each area are included in the letter linked here.

UNL Young Artist Award

UNL Young Artist Award recognizes Nebraska high school juniors who are talented in art, music, dance, theater, or film and emerging media. Selected students and their families are invited to UNL for Red Letter Day in the spring to see what a career in the arts may be like.

Applications are due to the website by Dec. 2.

Viola Bash

Viola Bash 2023 will take place Oct. 7 between 9:00am and 1:00pm at the Westbrook Music Building. The Bash will feature instruction in various techniques unique to violas for people of all ages, and we will hear performances by a few solo University violists, NEBratsche (the UNL viola ensemble), and all participants will perform in a mass viola ‘choir’.

Professor Potter and his assistant Andrea Alvarado Troncoso will conduct masterclasses for a few participants, and one can’t forget the ever-popular ‘donut break’!

The Event is free, though participants may purchase a Viola Bash t-shirt for $15 if ordered by Oct. 1. Contact Clark Potter to order a t-shirt or if you have any questions.

Bass Day

I am excited to announce the ‘lucky’ 13th Annual Bass Day at the Glenn Korff School of Music, University of Nebraska – Lincoln. The event will take place in the Westbrook Music Building on the main campus on Saturday, October 14th from 10 AM – 4 PM, allowing for those who are traveling some distance to attend. The event is free and open to the public including bass students, teachers, and string teachers who would like to learn more about the bass. 

Bass Day includes warm-ups & technical exercises, an orchestral excerpt session with conductor Dr. Tyler White, a solo masterclass (please let me know if you would like to play), a Big Bass Jam led by Kansas City Bass Guru Johnny Hamil, recitals, and more.

Cellobration

Cellists of all ages are invited to participate in this exciting event! Dr. Karen Becker, professor of cello in the Glenn Korff School of Music, looks forward to welcoming cellists of all ages to a fun day of music-making. The event takes place on Saturday, October 14, 2023 on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus.

This year will feature technique classes presented by UNL cello students, “Stretches for cellists” presented by UNL alum Molly Rezich, masterclasses with UNL cello professor Dr. Karen Becker and distinguished guest cellist Dr. David Littrell. And it wouldn’t be a Cellobration without the Cellobration Cello Choir!!

The day will end with a 3PM performance by faculty, UNL cello students, and the Cello Choir!
